Week One... Jewelry Repair School

You will learn:
Sawing… using the jewelers saw with correct blades
Drilling… using drill bits for design and piercing
Filing… using needle files for good mechanical connections and finishing
Sanding… using the correct grit of sandpaper
Buffing… using the correct compound abrasives for removing scratches
Polishing… using the correct compound for a ultra bright high luster
Texture Finishing… proper techniques in satin finishes
(The goal here is to produce a high luster finish removing the lest amount of metal)
 
Torch… correct usage of torch producing flame types of oxidizing, reducing and neutral
Hardening and Annealing… you will practice proper techniques and applications
 
Soldering… using fire coat and flux correctly to prevent oxidation and good solder flow
Soldering… using anti-flux to prevent solder flow
Soldering… correct method of applying solder to jewelry tweezers and pick up
Soldering… correct procedures to sweat soldering
 
Pickling…correct way for removing oxidations
Ultrasonic Cleaning… using ultrasonic cleaner and prevent gemstone damage
Ring Sizing… how to test old rings of previous sizing joints
Ring Sizing… you will size 5 to 10 rings down then up
Ring Sizing… half shank replacement
Ring Sizing… shank stretching
Ring Sizing with Stones… techniques to prevent over heating stones
Ring Sizing… half shank replacement
Prong Re-tipping… you will re-tip 20 to 40 worn prongs finishing prongs with cup bur
Prong Replacement… correct procedure for replacing worn or broken prongs.

Below are pictures of a ring a student worked on prior coming to the school. He fixed the broken prong in class then cleaned up his work. The prong replacement picture on the right was taken before clean up work. This ring is featured in the picture below on the left set with an ametrine.

 
Head and Shank… correctly prepare and solder a marquise head to accented shank
Stone Setting… set marquise center stone and two round accents using proper burs
 
Fabrication… fabricate a bezel set pendant, burnish set a cabochon stone
Stone Removal… using proper techniques removing from prongs and bezels
Hand Crafting… you will handcraft the twisted link bracelet in this picture
 
Chain Repair… using proper techniques repairing link, rope and serpentine chains

Week Two... Diamond Setting School

We will start the first day talking about gemstone hardness (resistance to scratching) and toughness (resistance to breakage).
Diamonds is the hardest natural material but can be broken with one blow. Jade is much softer than diamond but is the toughest
material naturally made. We will heat different gemstones and let them cool, talk about methods of protection from heat.
Next, we will learn all about burs, bur selecting, hand tools and the flex shaft used to accomplish diamond setting.


After demonstrations, You will set:
Round Settings standard round brilliant stones set in four and six prong Tiffany Settings. Prongs cleaned with cup burs.
Oval Settings oval brilliant stones set in four and six prong settings. Prongs cleaned with cup burs.
Emerald Setting emerald cut stones set in a ring and earrings. Prongs cleaned with cup burs.
Pear Setting pear brilliant cut stones set in a ring and earrings with V prongs. Techniques revealed not to break tip.
Marquise Setting marquise brilliant cut stones set in rings. Techniques revealed not to break tips.
Trillion Setting trillion brilliant cut stone set in ring. Techniques revealed not to break tips


After demonstrations, You will:
Tube Setting   cut a seat in the tube, set stone and burnish tube over with closer.
Bead Setting   cut a seats for round stones and set by forming beads
Channel Setting   cut seats in both sides of channel for stone setting. The process will be detailed carefully.
Bezel Setting   learn to set the height of the bezel and dress it for burnishing
Gypsy Setting   cut the seat for the gemstone to burnish
Pave Setting   cut the metal away to cover ring shank with gemstones
Pave Setting   cut metal away to cover ring shank with bead set gemstones
Baguette Setting   cut seats for baguettes for setting

At the end of this week you will be able to work with silver, gold & platinum

You will keep all finished products from the classes


These are some pieces from a two week goldsmithing course. The black onyx and tigers eye pendants on the right side were hand crafted in class.
